Gene's Inspiration

I was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Except for my college and law school years and a short stint on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, I have always called the Garden State my home, and I now live in Green Brook. I have traveled the world, spending a great deal of time in Africa, Europe and the Far East. My time in Hong Kong provided me with the background for the setting of The Deed.

I’m married to Patricia Lytle, an accomplished painter, sculptor and lawyer. When you read my book you will notice the Lytle name. In the book the character Sir James Lytle is based on Lt. Col. James R. Lytle, my father-in-law. I have four children. Eugene III is an attorney who practices law with me. Kevin is in sports management and operates his own company in Oslo, Norway. Jessica, a graduate of the University of Virginia, works in international finance for Bank of America in New York City. Michael attends New York University School of Medicine. I have one grandchild, Joseph, who is too young to do anything but be cute.

I have a Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School and practice law with the firm of Schumann Hanlon LLC. I am an equity member of the firm, which was founded in 1850 and is the oldest law firm in Hudson County and the second oldest in the State of New Jersey. I am an international and business attorney with a strong background in business transactions, corporate law and real estate. I have represented clients in South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Italy, Switzerland, Ukraine, Canada and the United States. I am a member of the bars of New York State and New Jersey.

In the business world, I have held various positions. I was president of General Media Inc., a public company; president of Mavety Media Group, Ltd, a magazine publishing company; publisher of Joe Montana’s In the Red Zone, a sports magazine; and a director and counsel to Eddy Match Company Limited, Ontario, Canada.

I am an avid fisherman and have had the opportunity to fish all over the world. Boating and flying are other favorite pastimes. I am an expert marksman too and have competed in pistol shooting competitions.

I collect old bottles and have an extensive collection of antique inkbottles. Some of the inkbottles are in my law office and I believe were the type used by the founders of my law firm some 160 years ago. One of the interesting aspects of collecting bottles is the history attached to them. I am a history buff and read a lot of history books.

In writing The Deed, I drew a lot from my life experiences, but I assure you I was never in the CIA.
